Dragon Ball Z: Gokuu Hishouden came out for the Game Boy in 1994, a time when playing an RPG on a handheld meant squinting at a tiny, greenish screen. Bandai published it, and it was one of the earlier attempts to bring the Dragon Ball Z story into a role playing format on Nintendo's portable system. In the game, you control Goku as he explores a world map and various locations, moving screen by screen. Your main goal is to follow the story of the Saiyan Saga, fighting through random enemy encounters that switch to a first person perspective for turn based battles. You manage a party, learn new techniques like the Kamehameha, and gather the seven Dragon Balls. The pacing can feel slow due to the frequent random battles, and the difficulty spikes noticeably during boss fights. Playing it feels like a dedicated, sometimes grindy, trip back to the specific constraints and ambitions of early 90s portable RPGs.
