About Dragon Ball Z
Dragon Ball Z for the NES came out in Japan in 1990, developed by Bandai. It was one of the earlier attempts to bring the anime's story to a home console, arriving when developers were still figuring out how to translate fighting manga into playable games. You got a cartridge that promised a lot, but the execution was very much of its time.
You control Goku, moving from a top-down world map into side-scrolling battle sequences. The main goal is to follow the story of the Saiyan Saga, fighting through a series of enemies to protect Earth. A signature mechanic is the card-based battle system; you don't directly punch or kick, but instead select from a hand of cards that represent different attacks, blocks, and power-ups. You also manage a power meter, or ki, which you must charge up to perform special moves like the Kamehameha. The pacing is slow, with random encounters on the map and battles that feel more like a strategic card game than an action brawler. It can be a difficult game due to its reliance on chance and a steep learning curve for the card mechanics. Playing it feels like navigating a complex, sometimes frustrating board game version of Dragon Ball Z.
