Dragon Ball Z Gaiden on NES is one of those weird, obscure Japan-only RPGs that never made it overseas—which is a shame, because it's actually a solid little turn-based fighter with some neat twists. You pick from Goku, Vegeta, or Piccolo (no Gohan, oddly) and battle through a what-if story where the Saiyans are being hunted down. The sprites are tiny but surprisingly detailed for an 8-bit game, and the combat's got this cool rock-paper-scissors thing where you guess enemy moves to counter them.

It’s not perfect—the random encounters get old fast, and good luck figuring out some of the Japanese menus if you don’t know the language. But if you’re into retro DBZ games, this one’s way more interesting than the button-mashers we got in the West. Just don’t expect a deep story—it’s mostly an excuse to punch Frieza’s goons in pixel form.
