Dragon Ball Z: Gokuu Hishouden is one of those early Game Boy RPGs that feels rough around the edges but still has that classic DBZ charm. You start off following Goku’s story from the Saiyan saga, picking your team and jumping into turn-based battles that are way simpler than later DBZ games—no crazy combos here, just basic attacks, ki blasts, and the occasional special move.
The sprites are tiny, of course, but they actually do a decent job capturing the characters’ looks. And yeah, it’s in Japanese, but if you’ve played enough old-school RPGs, you can kinda fumble your way through. The music’s got that classic Game Boy chiptune energy, too—expect a lot of beeps that somehow still sound like the anime’s soundtrack.
It’s not the deepest DBZ game out there, but if you’re into retro RPGs or just want to see how the series started on handhelds, it’s a neat little time capsule. Just don’t go in expecting modern polish.
