Dragon Ball Z - Gokuu Gekitouden is one of those early Game Boy fighters that feels rough around the edges but still has that classic DBZ charm. You pick from Goku, Piccolo, Vegeta, and a few others—each with their own basic combos and signature moves like the Kamehameha. The sprites are tiny, sure, but they actually do a decent job capturing the characters’ looks.
Matches are quick and chaotic, with a surprising amount of aerial combat for a Game Boy title. The controls take a minute to get used to—half the time I’d accidentally launch a ki blast when I meant to dash—but once it clicks, there’s something satisfying about landing a well-timed Solar Flare or dodging a beam attack at the last second.
It’s definitely not as polished as later DBZ fighters, but if you’re into retro handheld brawlers, this one’s a fun little time capsule. Just don’t expect Super Butoden levels of depth.
