Dr. Chaos came out in 1988 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, published by Fujisankei Communications International. It was one of those many action-adventure titles that tried to capture the exploratory spirit of the era, though it had its own particular flavor. You play as a man searching a bizarre, monster-filled mansion to rescue your brother from the titular doctor. The game is played screen by screen; you move from one static room to the next, never quite sure what you'll find. Your main tool is a sword for close combat, but you also find other items, like a bow, to deal with enemies at a distance. The objective is to locate pieces of a disassembled device to ultimately confront Dr. Chaos. The pacing is slow and deliberate, partly due to the high difficulty and the need to carefully manage your limited health. Exploring the mansion feels like piecing together a strange and dangerous puzzle.
