Downtown - Nekketsu Monogatari is one of those weird, rough-around-the-edges NES brawlers that feels like it was ahead of its time. You play as Alex or Ryan—two street punks trying to rescue Ryan’s girlfriend from a gang—but honestly, half the fun is just messing around in the city.

You can punch random pedestrians, steal their wallets (which feels kinda mean, but hey, you need cash for weapons), or duck into shops to buy bats, knives, or even guns. The combat’s clunky by today’s standards, but there’s something weirdly satisfying about the chaos—especially when you accidentally start a brawl that spills across multiple city blocks.

It’s janky, unpredictable, and definitely not polished, but that almost adds to the charm. If you’ve ever wanted a retro beat-em-up with some open-world mischief, this is worth a look.
