About Downtown - Nekketsu Monogatari (japan)
Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari came out for the NES in 1990 from Technos Japan Corp. It was part of that wave of late NES games that tried to blend genres, putting a brawler into a more open city environment. It always felt like a slightly different take on the developer's usual formula.
You control one of two high school students, Alex or Ryan, who fight through city streets and buildings against rival gangs. The main goal is to rescue Ryan's kidnapped girlfriend, which involves exploring the city screen by screen. Signature mechanics include the ability to pick up and use various weapons found on the street, from pipes to knives, and the freedom to enter shops to buy items or recover health. The pacing is deliberate as you navigate the urban map, and the difficulty comes from the sheer number of enemies that can swarm you. It feels like a rough but ambitious experiment in making a brawler with a world you can actually get lost in.
