About Double Dare
Double Dare came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, published by GameTek. It was one of many licensed games from that period, trying to capture the energy of a popular TV show on the home console.
You control a team of two kid contestants, moving through trivia rounds and physical challenges. The main goal is to earn the most cash by answering questions correctly or daring the other team, leading to a final obstacle course. Signature mechanics include using the D-pad to aim and throw objects at targets in the toss-up rounds, and then mashing the left and right buttons to run through the final course's obstacles like the Sundae Slide or the Wringer. The pacing is quick, with the computer opponent getting tougher on higher difficulty settings, and it feels like a frantic race against the clock, especially when you are scrambling to find a flag in the mess of an obstacle. The whole experience captures the silly, physical chaos of the show in a surprisingly direct way.
