Donkey Kong Country came out for the Super Nintendo in 1994, developed by Rare and published by Nintendo. It arrived when the 16-bit era was in full swing, and its visual style immediately set it apart from other platformers on the system.

You control Donkey Kong and his smaller companion Diddy, running and jumping through a series of side scrolling levels. Your main goal is to recover your stolen banana hoard from the Kremling tribe. The game is built on screen by screen exploration, with each stage presenting its own set of obstacles and enemies. Two of its signature mechanics are riding animal buddies, like the rhino Rambi who can smash through certain walls, and finding hidden bonus rooms tucked away behind false walls or in out of the way spots.
