Donkey Kong Country 2 is one of those SNES games that just sticks with you. You start off on Gangplank Galleon, which feels familiar if you played the first one, but then it quickly throws you into Crocodile Isle—K. Rool’s turf—and the whole vibe changes. The levels get wilder, with way more variety than the original, from swampy brambles to haunted pirate ships.
Instead of Donkey Kong, you’re playing as Diddy and Dixie, and losing one doesn’t immediately end your run—unless you lose both, which happens more than you’d think. The animal buddies are back, but now you actually turn into them instead of just riding them, which makes the bonus stages way more fun to hunt down. And speaking of secrets, the Lost World is brutal but so satisfying when you finally unlock it.
It’s no surprise this sold millions—the controls are tight, the music slaps, and those pre-rendered graphics still hold up. Just watch out for those Kremlings; they’re sneakier this time around.
