About Don Doko Don (japan)
Don Doko Don came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, developed and published by Taito. It was part of that wave of Japanese platformers that never made it overseas, so you had to rely on imports or later discoveries. The game has a simple, cartoonish look typical of the era, with bright colors and clear, blocky environments.
You control a little character, one of two dwarves, who fights enemies by whacking them with a hammer. Your main goal is to clear each single screen area of all the monsters. Instead of just hitting them directly, you usually bonk enemies to turn them into eggs, then you kick the eggs to eliminate them. This two step process adds a small puzzle element to the action. You explore the stages screen by screen, and the game scrolls only when you clear the current area of foes. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty builds steadily, introducing new enemy types and stage layouts that keep you on your toes. It feels satisfying to methodically clear a room, planning your hammer swings and egg kicks to avoid getting cornered.
