Okay, so Disney's Mulan on Game Boy is one of those licensed platformers that actually holds up better than you'd expect. You start off with Mulan sneaking into the army camp—classic scene—and right away you're jumping over pits, dodging arrows, and slicing up Hun soldiers with her sword. The sprites are surprisingly detailed for a Game Boy game, and the music? Totally nails that "Reflection" vibe from the movie.
Some levels switch things up—like riding Khan the horse through a burning village or sneaking past guards in the Imperial City. The controls are a little stiff (it is a 90s platformer), but once you get used to the rhythm, pulling off combos feels oddly satisfying. And yeah, Mushu pops up to yell advice at you, which is either hilarious or annoying depending on how many times you’ve died to the same spear guy.
It’s short, maybe an hour or two if you’re decent at these games, but there’s something charming about how faithfully it sticks to the movie’s story. Definitely a nostalgia trip if you grew up with it.
