About Destination Earthstar
Destination Earthstar came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, published by Acclaim Entertainment. It was part of that wave of NES games trying to blend different genres, a side-scrolling shooter mixed with an adventure map. You don't see many people talking about it now, but it had its own particular feel among the space games of the era.
You pilot a small starfighter, switching between an overhead map for navigation and side-scrolling stages for the action. Your main goal is to find five hidden crystals scattered across the planet's surface. The core loop involves exploring the map screen by screen, landing at specific points to enter caverns and bases. Inside these areas, you shoot robotic enemies and search for the crystals, which are often tucked away in corners or guarded by larger foes. The game can be unforgiving; your ship handles with a certain heaviness, and enemies respawn quickly, making careful movement more important than pure speed. It feels like a slow, methodical hunt across an alien world where every new screen could hide a vital piece of the puzzle or a sudden swarm of enemies.
