Derby Stallion Zenkoku Ban came out in 1987 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed and published by ASCII Corporation. It was part of that wave of simulation games on the NES that tried to capture a specific real world hobby, in this case, the world of horse racing and breeding.
You take on the role of a horse owner and breeder. Your main goal is to raise, train, and race your horses to win the most prestigious events in Japan. The game revolves around a few key systems: you manage your stable by purchasing new horses, you train them to improve their speed and stamina through daily routines, and you breed your best performers to hopefully produce a champion foal with superior stats. The pacing is slow and methodical, focused on long term planning over many in game years. Successfully guiding a horse you bred from its birth to a major race victory feels like a genuine accomplishment.
