Defenders of Dynatron City is one of those weird, late-era NES games that feels like it was made by people who just watched too many Saturday morning cartoons—in the best way. You pick from a squad of goofy, vaguely superhero-ish characters (my favorite was the guy who turns into a giant magnet, because of course that’s a power) and brawl through side-scrolling levels packed with robots and weird sci-fi hazards. The controls are a little stiff, and some of the enemy patterns feel cheap, but there’s a weird charm to the whole thing—like someone mashed up a comic book and a toy commercial and somehow made it playable. It’s definitely not the most polished NES game out there, but if you’re into offbeat ‘90s nostalgia, it’s worth a look.
