About Defender Of The Crown (europe)
Defender of the Crown came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986, developed by Cinemaware. It was one of those games that stood out on the NES for trying to blend different kinds of gameplay into one package, something not many other titles on the system attempted at the time.
You control a Saxon knight trying to unite England after the king's death. The main goal is to conquer all the territories by managing your armies on a strategic map, then jumping into action sequences. You lead raids on enemy castles with side-scrolling sword combat, joust in tournaments for prestige and land, and command siege engines to breach castle walls. The pacing is slow and deliberate on the map, but the action parts are quick and demanding. It feels like a mix of careful planning and sudden, skill-based challenges when you play.
