De Ja Vu came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985, published by Kemco. It was part of that early wave of NES games, a time when developers were figuring out what worked on the console. You control private investigator Tony Loreno, who wakes up in a bathroom with no memory of how he got there. Your job is to explore the city, gather items, and talk to people to piece together what happened. The game plays out screen by screen; you move a cursor to look at things, pick up objects, and choose dialogue options from a menu. Combat is minimal, mostly resolved through text choices if you get into a scrape. The puzzles can be tricky, requiring specific item combinations or conversations to progress, and the game does not hold your hand. It feels like slowly untangling a knot, one careful pull at a time.
