Datsugoku—or P.O.W. as it was known outside Japan—is one of those NES beat-em-ups that feels like it should be way more famous than it is. You start off busting out of a prison camp with nothing but your fists, which is already a solid premise, but then you quickly find knives, grenades, and even a flamethrower lying around. The controls are a little stiff compared to later brawlers, but there’s something satisfying about the way enemies crumple when you land a solid hit.

It’s got that classic arcade vibe where the difficulty spikes hard if you’re not careful, but the NES version at least gives you unlimited continues. The music’s got this weirdly catchy military march thing going on, too—I still hum it sometimes. If you’re into old-school brawlers, this one’s a hidden gem worth a few rounds.
