About Daikoukai Jidai (japan)
Daikoukai Jidai came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, developed and published by Koei. It was part of that wave of complex simulation and strategy games on the NES that asked a bit more from players than simple platforming. You don't control a single character so much as you manage an entire trading company during the Age of Exploration.
You begin by choosing a European nation, like Portugal or Spain, and then take command of a fleet of ships. Your main goal is to build a commercial empire by buying goods in one port and selling them for profit in another, all while competing against rival traders. Key mechanics involve navigating the world map screen by screen, carefully managing your ship's supplies and crew morale, and engaging in simple naval combat if you cross paths with pirates or hostile nations. The pacing is deliberate, almost methodical, as you chart new routes and watch market prices fluctuate. It feels like a quiet, persistent battle of wits against the game's economic systems and the vast, empty sea.
