About Dai-2-ji - Super Robot Taisen (japan)

Dai-2-Ji Super Robot Taisen came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, developed by WinkySoft and published by Banpresto. It was part of that wave of later NES titles that felt more complex and ambitious, a strategy RPG built around a crossover of popular Japanese mecha anime series. You don't need to know the shows to play, but seeing the different robots share a battlefield was a big part of its appeal at the time.

You command a squad of giant robots, each piloted by a character from various anime, moving them on a grid-based map to engage the enemy. The main objective is to complete scenario-based missions, which usually involve defeating all hostile units or protecting a specific ally for a set number of turns. Signature mechanics include using spirit commands, which are special abilities that consume a pilot's SP to perform actions like boosting accuracy or repairing damage, and the interceptor system, where certain units can automatically fire on enemies that pass within range. The game has a deliberate pace, and the difficulty can be unforgiving, forcing you to carefully consider positioning and resource management. It feels like solving a violent, mechanical puzzle with every new mission.
