Dai-2-Ji - Super Robot Taisen is one of those classic NES mecha strategy games where you command a squad of giant robots straight out of anime—think Gundam, Mazinger, and a bunch of other series mashed together. The turn-based battles are surprisingly deep for an NES title, with terrain bonuses, unit upgrades, and pilots who level up their stats over time.
First thing you’ll notice? The sprites are tiny but packed with charm, and the soundtrack has that crunchy FM synth energy. Early missions ease you in, but before long, you’re juggling repair costs, morale, and whether to bum-rush enemies or play defensively. Some of the robot combinations feel overpowered (looking at you, Getter Robo), but that just makes pulling off a perfect turn even sweeter.
Fair warning: it’s Japan-only, so expect menus in Japanese—though if you’ve played a SRW game before, the icons and unit stats are pretty intuitive. The nostalgia hits hard if you grew up with these mecha series.
