About Cutthroat Island (usa, Europe)
CutThroat Island came out for the Game Boy in 1995, developed by Software Creations. It was part of that wave of movie tie-in games from the mid-90s, a time when you could expect to find an adaptation for almost any major film on the portable console. This one was based on the pirate adventure of the same name, and it landed right alongside many other action-platformers competing for pocket space.
You control the pirate captain Morgan Adams, navigating her through side-scrolling levels. Your main goal is to find the three pieces of a treasure map, which involves exploring different areas like towns, caves, and enemy ships. The gameplay mixes sword fighting with some light platforming; you swing your cutlass at guards and rival pirates, and you also use a grappling hook to climb to higher ledges. The levels are structured screen by screen, and the pacing can be quite deliberate as you search each area for the map fragments and necessary keys. It is not an easy game, with some tricky enemy placements and jumps that demand careful timing. Playing it feels like a methodical hunt, where each new screen cleared brings you a small step closer to the buried loot.
