Cool World on the NES came out in 1993 from Ocean Software, a time when licensed games based on movies were common. It arrived late in the console's life, a period filled with many side scrolling platformers trying to capture the energy of their source material.

You control the cartoon character Holli Would, running and jumping through levels inspired by the film. The main goal is to navigate each stage, avoiding enemies and environmental hazards to reach the end. Your primary actions are jumping on foes or using a limited slap attack; you also collect ink pots to unlock new areas and find keys to open doors. The game moves at a brisk pace, but the level design can be unforgiving, with precise jumps required over instant death pits. Playing it feels like a race against the clock in a world that is constantly trying to knock you back to the start.
