About Conflict
Conflict came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989, developed and published by Vic Tokai. It was part of that wave of late 80s NES games that tried to blend different genres, offering an overhead perspective for exploration mixed with side scrolling sections for combat. The game presented a modern military setting, which felt like a shift from the more common fantasy or sci fi themes of the era.
You control a soldier navigating through hostile territory. Your main goal is to rescue hostages while fighting off enemy soldiers and vehicles. The gameplay switches between an overhead map view, where you move from screen to screen to find key locations, and side-on action stages where you use a rifle and grenades. You need to manage your limited ammunition carefully and locate specific buildings to progress. The game moves at a deliberate pace, with the constant threat of enemies depleting your health quickly. It feels like a tense, methodical crawl through a dangerous landscape where every shot counts.
