About Cliffhanger (usa, Europe)
Cliffhanger came out for the Game Boy in 1993, developed by Spidersoft and published by Sony Imagesoft. It was one of many licensed action games on the platform, trying to capture the high-altitude thrills of the movie in a portable format. You could find it in a plastic clamshell case on a shelf next to other movie tie-ins, a common sight in rental stores back then.
You control Gabe Walker, a mountain rescue ranger, navigating a series of side-scrolling stages. Your main goal is to stop a group of criminals who have stolen money from the U.S. Treasury. You move screen by screen, punching and kicking your way through waves of enemies. The combat is straightforward, but the platforming sections are notoriously difficult; precise jumps are required across narrow ledges and over bottomless pits, often with slippery controls. You also collect items like health packs and extra lives, which are essential for surviving the later, more punishing levels. The game moves at a brisk pace, but the constant threat of instant death from a missed jump creates a tense, stop-and-start rhythm. Playing it feels like a constant battle against both the enemies on screen and the game's own unforgiving physics.
