City-Tour GP is one of those N64 racing games that somehow flew under the radar, but it’s got this weirdly satisfying mix of arcade speed and just enough realism to keep you hooked. You start off picking from a handful of Japanese GT cars—nothing crazy, but they handle differently enough that you’ll probably wreck a few times figuring out which one suits you. The tracks? All based on real Japanese circuits, and they’ve got that late ‘90s polygonal charm with some surprisingly tight corners.
The physics aren’t full-on sim, but they’re not pure Mario Kart either—if you slam into a wall, you’re definitely losing speed, and drifting takes some actual finesse. The engine sounds are oddly good for an N64 game, too. It’s the kind of racer where you’ll finish a race, realize you’ve been white-knuckling the controller, and immediately hit restart. Not the prettiest racer on the system, but way more fun than it has any right to be.
