About Chuuka Taisen (japan)
Chuuka Taisen came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, developed by Sunsoft. It was one of many side-scrolling action games from that period, offering a take on the Journey to the West story. You don't see it mentioned often, but it had a distinct look and feel among other NES titles.
You control Son Goku, moving through levels screen by screen. Your main goal is to fight through waves of enemy soldiers and mythical creatures to reach the stage boss. You use a extending pole for your basic attacks, and you can collect power-ups to temporarily change your weapon, like gaining a fireball shot. The game is quite fast, and the difficulty ramps up quickly with aggressive enemies and tricky platforming. It feels like a relentless rush from one fight to the next.
