About Chuck Rock
Chuck Rock on Game Boy came out in 1992, developed by Core Design. It was part of that wave of console platformers making the jump to handheld, a time when you could carry a full cartoon adventure in your pocket. The small screen and limited colors were just the way things were, and you got used to them pretty quickly.
You control Chuck, a big bellied caveman, on a quest to rescue his girlfriend from the rival dinosaur, Gary Gritter. You move screen by screen, punching and belly flopping enemies. Your main move is picking up and throwing large rocks, which is essential for breaking certain walls and hitting distant foes. The levels are linear but filled with pits and obstacles that require careful jumps. It can be quite unforgiving; a mistimed leap means starting the section over. Navigating the prehistoric landscapes with these simple, physical actions feels direct and sometimes tense.
