About Chessmaster, The (europe)
I remember picking up Chessmaster for the Game Boy in 1991, a portable version of the computer game published by The Software Toolworks. On a system dominated by action and puzzle games, it was one of the few serious options for strategy, letting you carry a full chess opponent in your pocket.
You control the white or black pieces, taking turns against the computer or a friend via link cable. The main goal is simply to win the game of chess, but the handheld version included key features like a library of classic games to study and adjustable difficulty levels that made the computer a real challenge. The pacing is entirely your own; you can think through a move for as long as you need. It feels like having a patient, and sometimes brutally efficient, chess tutor always available.
