Chalvo 55 came out for the Game Boy in 2002, published by Natsume. It was a late release for the original handheld, a time when many developers were already moving on to more powerful systems. You don't hear much about it, which is a shame because it does something different from the typical platformers and puzzle games of that era.

You control a small, spherical robot that can roll, jump, and, most importantly, transform. By pressing a button, you morph into a cube, which lets you stack yourself to reach higher platforms or crush enemies below. Your main goal is to navigate through each single-screen stage, finding the exit while avoiding or eliminating the creatures that patrol the area. The challenge comes from figuring out the right form for each situation; you might need to be a ball to gain speed for a long jump, then quickly become a cube to safely land on a spike trap. The pacing is methodical, demanding you stop and assess the layout before making a move. It feels like solving a spatial puzzle where you are the primary tool.
