About Centre Court Tennis
Centre Court Tennis came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1998, developed by Hudson Soft. It was part of that wave of early 3D sports games on the system, a time when polygonal athletes were still a novelty. You could play singles or doubles, and the selection of courts and players was straightforward, without the licensing of real professional tours.
You control a tennis player from a behind-the-back perspective, moving them around the court to hit the ball. The main goal is to win matches by outscoring your opponent in sets of games. The gameplay relies on timing your button presses for different shot types; you can perform flat shots, slices, and lobs, and a well-timed press at the ball's peak gives you a more powerful stroke. The computer opponents offer a decent challenge, especially on higher difficulty settings where they rarely make unforced errors. Rallies can be surprisingly long, and a single point often feels like a small battle of positioning and patience. It feels satisfying to place a shot just inside the line after a long exchange.
