About Castlevania 2
Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, developed and published by Konami. It arrived a couple of years after the first game, part of that wave of NES titles that started experimenting with bigger worlds beyond simple stage progression.
You control Simon Belmont, tasked with gathering Dracula's five scattered body parts to break a fatal curse. The game shifts from linear stages to an open countryside you explore screen by screen, traveling between towns by day. At night, the monsters grow stronger, a cycle that dictates your pacing. You talk to villagers for cryptic clues, buy new whips and secondary weapons, and use collected crystals to reveal hidden mansions that serve as the game's dungeons. The difficulty comes less from precise platforming and more from figuring out where to go with minimal guidance, often requiring you to kneel in specific spots with certain items to progress. Playing it feels like piecing together an elaborate, sometimes frustrating puzzle in a world that never sleeps.
