Castle of Deceit is one of those NES games that starts with a wild premise and just runs with it. You play as Cebo, a rookie mage sent into a cursed castle where reality itself is broken—hallucinations come to life, walls shift, and nothing’s quite what it seems. The opening cutscene sets the tone: an ancient guardian named Phfax went nuts protecting magic runes, and now his nightmares are literally walking around stealing them.

The first thing you’ll notice? The atmosphere. The castle’s full of flickering torches, eerie whispers, and enemies that might just vanish if you blink. Combat’s simple at first—swing your staff, dodge attacks—but the real challenge is figuring out what’s real. That chest might be loot… or a mimic. That hallway might lead forward… or loop you back. It’s got that classic NES jank in places, but the mind-bending level design makes up for it.

Honestly, half the fun is just seeing what weird trick the game pulls next. You’ll either love it or throw your controller at the wall. No in-between.
