Carmageddon 64 came out in 1999 for the Nintendo 64, developed by Torus Games. It was a time when 3D driving games were pushing into new, often violent, territory, and this was the N64's take on that trend. The game was a port of the original PC title, attempting to bring its particular brand of automotive mayhem to the console.

You control one of several drivers in a heavily armed vehicle. The main goal is straightforward: win races by any means necessary, which usually involves destroying every other car on the track. You can also win by finishing the laps or, most notoriously, by running over all the pedestrians on the course. Signature mechanics include collecting power-ups scattered around the environment to repair your car or get better weapons, and causing enough carnage to fill a "power bar" that grants temporary invincibility and speed. The pacing is chaotic and the difficulty can be unforgiving, with tight controls that take some getting used to. The whole experience feels like a messy, high-speed demolition derby where the rules are just suggestions.
