Captain Silver is this weird little pirate platformer that never made it outside Japan on the NES—which is a shame because it's got this janky charm to it. You play as a pirate (obviously) swinging your sword at skeletons, bats, and these weird fish-men while hopping between ships and caves. The controls feel a little stiff at first, like your guy slides a bit when he stops running, but you get used to it.
What’s cool is how the levels mix things up—one minute you’re on a stormy ship deck, the next you’re dodging spikes in some underground ruin. The music’s got that classic NES chiptune energy too, all bouncy and pirate-y. It’s not the deepest game, but there’s something satisfying about whacking enemies with that chunky sword swing. Just don’t expect it to hold your hand—those bottomless pits come out of nowhere sometimes.
If you’re into obscure retro stuff, it’s a neat little time capsule from when arcade ports were still figuring out how to work on consoles.
