California Speed on N64 is one of those arcade racers that just feels right—no complicated tuning, no career mode, just pick a car and blast down palm-lined highways. The tracks are ridiculous in the best way: you’ll weave through movie studios, dodge traffic on winding coastal roads, and even race through a giant donut (because why not?).
Graphics are chunky N64-era 3D, but the sense of speed holds up, especially in splitscreen. The cars handle like they’re on rails—a little floaty, but it works when you’re hitting 200mph past the Hollywood sign. My only gripe? The rubberband AI can be brutal if you’re not nailing every drift.
Still, it’s pure dumb fun, especially with a friend. You’ll be yelling at each other by lap two.
