California Speed on N64 is one of those arcade racers that just feels right—simple controls, bright colors, and tracks that actually look like California if you squint a little. The prototype version has some rough edges (it is a prototype, after all), but there’s something charming about blasting down a palm tree-lined highway at ridiculous speeds while the scenery blurs past.
You’ve got a handful of cars to pick from, and they all handle differently—some slide around corners like they’re on ice, others grip the road like they’re glued to it. The tracks loop around landmarks that vaguely resemble stuff like the Golden Gate Bridge, and there’s even a desert stage where the heat shimmers off the pavement. It’s not the deepest racer out there, but if you miss that late-’90s arcade vibe, this one’s a solid time killer.
Just don’t expect a polished final product—half the fun is seeing what quirks the prototype left in.
