About California Games (europe)
California Games came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989, published by Epyx. It was part of that wave of multi-event sports titles on the NES that offered a quick, varied alternative to the deeper simulations.
You control an athlete across six events: half-pipe skateboarding, footbag, surfing, roller skating, BMX, and flying disc. The main objective is to score as many points as possible in each event by performing specific tricks and meeting the event's requirements. In half-pipe skateboarding, you build momentum by pumping up and down the ramps, then launch into the air to execute grabs and spins. For footbag, you keep the bag aloft using only your feet and head, chaining consecutive hits for a higher score. The controls are often about precise timing and rhythm, and some events, like the BMX course, can be surprisingly difficult to master. It feels like a collection of clever, sometimes finicky, mini-games that are perfect for short bursts of play.
