I first played Burger Time Deluxe on my Game Boy back in 1991. It was published by Data East, a company known for arcade ports, and it fit right in with the other puzzle platformers of that handheld era. The screen was small and green, but the game was perfectly suited for quick sessions.

You control Chef Peter Pepper, a tiny man in a white uniform. Your job is to build burgers by walking over the individual ingredients on each screen; buns, patties, lettuce, and cheese fall down a level when you cross them. The main objective is to complete all the burgers on a stage while avoiding enemies like Mr. Hot Dog and Mr. Pickle. Your primary defense is a limited supply of pepper you can sprinkle to temporarily stun them. You can also crush enemies by dropping burger parts on them as they fall. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty ramps up quickly as the layouts get more complex and the enemies multiply. It feels like a constant, frantic race against the clock and your own dwindling pepper supply.
