About Buck Bumble (j)
Buck Bumble came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1998, developed by Argonaut Software. It was one of those 3D flight games that felt experimental for the console, a time when developers were still figuring out how to make the most of the analog stick. You don't play as a person or a car; you control a cybernetically enhanced bumblebee, which immediately set it apart from the platformers and racers that dominated the system.
You pilot Buck through large, open environments, flying freely to complete objectives like defending your hive or escorting allies. The controls let you hover, strafe, and perform a quick 180-degree turn, which is essential for dogfighting the other robotic insects that swarm you. A big part of the game is mastering the lock-on targeting to shoot down enemies while constantly moving to avoid return fire. The difficulty can spike unexpectedly, especially when you're trying to manage multiple threats at once. It feels surprisingly agile once you get the hang of it, a mix of careful aiming and frantic aerial maneuvering.
