About Buck Bumble
Buck Bumble came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1998, developed by Argonaut Software. It was one of those 3D flight games that felt experimental for the console, a time when developers were still figuring out how to use the analog stick for full freedom of movement. You don't play as a person or a spaceship; you control a cybernetically enhanced bumblebee, which was a pretty unusual concept even then.
You fly Buck through large, open outdoor environments, completing missions that usually involve shooting hostile insects and robots. The main objective shifts between search and destroy tasks, escort missions, and simple races. Two mechanics define the game: the ability to fly freely in any direction, including straight up and down, and a unique soccer-style mini-game you can access from the main menu. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly, especially when you are trying to protect a friendly character from swarming enemies. Controlling a bee with a gun, zipping through the air and dodging fire, gives the whole thing a strangely lighthearted and chaotic feel.
