About Breakthru
BreakThru came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986, published by Data East. It was part of that wave of early NES titles that explored straightforward action concepts, fitting right in with other military-themed games from the period.
You control a small armored vehicle, driving through enemy territory from an overhead perspective. Your main goal is to rescue prisoners of war held in various camps, navigating through each screen which scrolls as you move. You use a mounted machine gun to destroy enemy vehicles and structures, and you can also collect power-ups to upgrade your firepower. The game moves at a brisk pace, and the difficulty ramps up quickly with more aggressive enemy patrols. Driving into the heart of the enemy base to complete a rescue feels like a tense, focused mission.
