About Brainbender
Brainbender was a Game Boy release from 1990, developed by Realtime Associates and published by Acclaim. It arrived during the handheld's early years, a time when puzzle games were experimenting with new formats beyond falling blocks. This one stood out for its particular blend of logic and action.
You control a small character navigating a series of single screen rooms. Your main goal is to collect all the keys in a stage to unlock the exit. The signature mechanics involve manipulating the environment directly; you push blocks to create paths, and you can also rotate the entire room ninety degrees, which changes the effect of gravity and makes platforms become walls. The pacing is deliberate, demanding you stop and think through each move, as a wrong push can permanently block your progress. It feels like untangling a knot in your mind with your hands.
