About Brain Drain (japan)
Brain Drain was a Japan only Game Boy release from 1990, developed by Aicom and published by VAP. It arrived during a period when the handheld was establishing its library of original action puzzle games, distinct from the many arcade ports. This title fit right into that experimental niche.
You control a small, round character navigating a series of single screen rooms. The goal is to collect all the question mark blocks in a stage to open the exit door. Your primary tool is a yo yo you can swing to stun enemies or, more importantly, to grab and pull blocks. This block pulling is the core mechanic; you rearrange the stage to create platforms and pathways. The game is methodical, requiring you to plan your moves carefully as one wrong pull can trap you. The difficulty comes from the spatial puzzles and the constant presence of patrolling enemies you must avoid or temporarily disable. It feels like a deliberate, sometimes tense, test of your foresight.
