About Boulder Dash
I first played Boulder Dash on my Game Boy around 1990. It was a port by First Star Software of a game that had already been on computers, but having it in my hands felt different. On a system known for simple, quick games, this one offered a more deliberate kind of puzzle. It wasn't about speed; it was about thinking your way through each screen.
You control a little man named Rockford, navigating caves one screen at a time. Your goal is straightforward: collect a certain number of diamonds to open the exit before the timer runs out. The signature mechanics are digging through dirt and avoiding the physics of falling boulders. Pushing a boulder the wrong way can trap you, and touching certain enemies ends your life instantly. The pacing is tense because you are always working against the clock, and one wrong move can collapse the whole cave on your head. It feels like a constant, careful calculation where every action has a permanent consequence.
