About Boulder Dash (europe)
Boulder Dash came to the Game Boy in 1990, published by First Star Software. It was one of many puzzle games on the system, a portable version of a concept that had already found success on home computers. You got a lot of game in that little gray cartridge, a whole series of caves to work through without any fuss or grandiose story.
You control a little man named Rockford, digging through dirt to gather a required number of diamonds on each screen. The signature mechanics are the boulders and the dirt itself. You have to be careful when digging underneath boulders; if they are unsupported, they fall, and if one lands on you, it's game over. You also encounter enemies like fireflies and butterflies that follow set patrol patterns, and you can often trap them by collapsing rocks on their heads. The pacing is methodical, demanding you plan your route a few steps ahead to avoid getting crushed or cornered. It feels like a tense, careful excavation where a single misstep can undo all your progress.
