About Body Harvest (e)
Body Harvest came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1998, developed by DMA Design, the studio that would later create Grand Theft Auto III. It arrived during a time when the N64 library was expanding beyond its core platformers and adventure games, offering a different kind of open world experience. The game was ambitious, attempting to blend vehicle combat with third person action on a scale that felt significant for the console.
You control Adam Drake, a soldier sent back in time to stop an alien invasion from harvesting humanity across different eras. The main objective is to protect groups of civilians in large, open levels by eliminating the alien threat. You spend a lot of time driving various vehicles, from jeeps to tanks, which are essential for traversing the landscape and fighting the large alien creatures. On foot, the combat is straightforward but can feel clumsy, relying on a limited selection of weapons. The pacing is deliberate; you must explore each era thoroughly to find key items and destroy the mother organism to progress. It is a difficult game, where poor planning can lead to failing the mission quickly. The feeling of driving across a vast map under constant threat creates a unique, isolating tension.
