About Block Kuzushi (japan)
I picked up Block Kuzushi GB back in 1995, a Japan only release from Natsume for the original Game Boy. It was one of those many puzzle games that filled out the library, a straightforward take on Breakout that you could carry in your pocket. In an era dominated by Tetris, this was a simpler, more methodical alternative.
You control a paddle at the bottom of the screen, deflecting a single ball to smash an arrangement of colored blocks above. Your main goal is to clear every block from each stage to advance. The signature mechanics involve collecting power ups that fall from broken blocks; these can widen your paddle, give you a multi ball, or even a laser to shoot blocks directly. The game progresses screen by screen, with the layouts and block durability introducing a gradual difficulty. It feels like a patient, tactile exercise in angles and timing.
