I picked up Black Forest Tale for the original Game Boy back when it came out. It was one of those cartridges you'd find in a bargain bin, and I don't remember much about who made it. It fits right in with the kind of exploratory action games that were common on the system, the ones that felt big even on that small, green-tinted screen.

You control a young adventurer tasked with lifting a curse from a haunted forest. Your main goal is to navigate through a series of interconnected screens, each one a self-contained puzzle or combat encounter. You use a simple sword for close attacks and a limited supply of arrows for hitting distant switches or enemies. Progress is measured by finding special keys to unlock new areas, and the game has a deliberate, sometimes unforgiving pace where a single mistake can send you back to the start of a section. Moving through its quiet, methodical world feels like slowly untangling a knot.
