About Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon R
I picked up a copy of Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon R for the Game Boy back in 1994. It was published by Angel, a company that handled a few other anime games of that era. On a system filled with platformers and RPGs, this was one of the few titles that let you step directly into the shoes of the Sailor Scouts. It felt like a natural part of the portable gaming landscape at the time, a straightforward action game you could play in short bursts.
You control Sailor Moon herself, moving screen by screen to fight off enemies. Your main goal is to rescue your fellow Scouts, who are scattered across the levels. The core mechanics are simple: you attack with your Moon Stick, and you can collect heart items to unleash your special Tiara Boomerang attack. The game is structured around exploring these discrete areas, defeating all the enemies on a screen to proceed. The pacing is brisk, though some later stages can get quite difficult with the limited attack range. Playing it feels like a direct, slightly clumsy translation of the show's energy into a classic Game Boy action format.
