About Beethoven's 2nd
I picked up Beethoven's 2nd for the Game Boy back in 1993. It was published by Hi Tech Expressions, a company that put out a number of licensed titles during that period. On a system filled with platformers and puzzle games, this one stood out simply because it was based on a movie about a St. Bernard. It wasn't trying to be a major event; it was just another cartridge you'd find in the bargain bin, a familiar face in the portable lineup.
You control the dog Beethoven, navigating him through side scrolling levels viewed from the side. Your main goal is to rescue his puppies, which are hidden throughout the stages. The gameplay involves a lot of running and jumping across platforms, avoiding hazards like garden gnomes and other neighborhood obstacles. You can dig in certain spots to uncover bones, which act as your health, and you collect milk bones to gain extra lives. The pacing is methodical, requiring you to check every nook for your missing pups, and the challenge comes from precise jumps and enemy patterns. It feels like a straightforward, slightly clunky quest to reunite a family.
